A classic work of fiction by Nobel Prize winning author Toni Morrison, Beloved goes into the depths of the black south in the late nineteenth century. Much like Morrison’s other bestselling novels –The Bluest Eye
andSong of Solomon
– Beloved follows the plight of one character in particular, while simulataneously revealing the intricacies of history, culture and relationships.
Beloved is a complex novel that moves between the main character Sethe’s past and present. Sethe’s past has left her with many wounds, particularly after enduring abuse and torment on the plantation she was sold to as a young girl. Luckily, Sethe is able to find shelter for herself and her children with her mother-in-law Baby Suggs. Yet the safety is short lived, since one of her greatest tormentors from the plantation returns to find her. Terrified of having her children near him, Sethe decides to take the lives of her children, though she’s only able to kill one daughter. Baby Suggs buries the child and labels her tombstone with the single word “Beloved.” From that point forward in the harrowing novel, Sethe continues to struggle with not only the real, living parts of her past that come back, but also the “Beloved” child that haunts her home.
