Made into a major motion picture in 2008, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is a heartbreaking novel about two boys living very different lives during the Holocaust. Author John Boyne crafted a deeply compelling historical text, which has been compared to the classic Holocaust autobiography The Diary of Anne Frank”
The city is Berlin, Germany and the year is 1942. A young boy named Bruno comes home one day to learn that him and his family are moving. Not only that, they’re moving far away from his friends and all the other children. Bruno’s house is also very strange because of a tall fence that separates him from something going on in the distance. Bruno is curious and wants to know what goes on beyond the fence. While exploring, he meets another little boy. What develops is a friendship between two children on different sides of the fence, and ultimately different sides of the Holocaust. Like The Diary of Anne Frank, Boyne’s novel tells the story from the perspective of a child who isn’t aware of the terror taking place during World War II. This innocent, child-like view is what makes this novel so compelling and intricate.
