A beloved classic for decades, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is the second installment in the Chronicles of Narnia series by C.S. Lewis. A beautiful story filled with fantasy, but grounded in real-life lessons, this title is a popular read in classrooms across the country.
We begin by meeting four rambunctious siblings – Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy Pevensie. After London was attacked during World War II, the four siblings are sent to live in the countryside. In the country house, they occupy themselves by exploring. While running about, the youngest sibling Lucy goes into one of the house’s wardrobes. What appears to be just a wardrobe ends up being a portal into another world, the world of Narnia. Here she meets a half-man, half-horse named Tummus, who she takes tea with. When Tummus helps her return back to the house, her family doesn’t believe her fantastical sounding story. It isn’t until her and Edmund happen to fall into Narnia that the fantasy becomes reality for all the siblings.
Now that they’ve discovered this magical world, the children can’t help but explore it. Once there, they come in contact with more magical creatures, like a talking beaver. They also learn about the White Witch, who has taken control over Narnia. The children soon embark upon an adventure to return Narnia to it’s rightful ruler, Aslan the lion.
This title is recommended for grades three to six, or readers with an eight-year-old reading level. This edition includes black-and-white illustrations by the series’ original illustrator Pauline Baynes.
