The Watsons Go to Birmingham is a popular and well-received children’s book written by Christopher Paul Curtis, author of Bud, Not Buddy – the first book ever to win both the Newbery Medal and the Coretta Scott King Author Award. Much like Bud, Not Buddy, The Watsons Go to Birmingham is set in Flint, Michigan, where Curtis grew up. He uses his real-life experiences to create a novel that is both realistic and powerful.
The story is narrated by Kenny, a fourth grade boy whose family is called the Weird Watsons. What makes the Watsons so weird? A lot of it has to do with Kenny’s older brother, who became the king of Clark Elementary by being a bully. Kenny is on the opposite spectrum from his older brother, since Kenny is constantly having to deal with bullies. Things change dramatically for Kenny thanks to his trouble making older brother. After getting in hot water with their parents, punishment is inflicted on the whole family, who has to spend the summer in Birmingham, Alabama with their Grandma Sands, who isn’t known for being very soft. Their time in Birmingham turns out to be a lot more eye-opening than anticipated. A change of scenery might be just what the Weird Watsons need.
A funny and historical children’s book, this title is recommended for readers in grades three to six, or reading at an eight to twelve-year-old level.
