To Kill a Mockingbird
When “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee was first published, it was an instant success, recognized for its critical insight, compelling narrative and creative storytelling approach. In 1961, this American classic won the Pulitzer Prize and in 1962 it was adapted into an Academy Award-winning film. This masterpiece has been translated into more than 40 languages and sold more than 30 million copies.

“Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit ‘em, but remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird,” a lawyer tells his children in Harper Lee’s classic novel “To Kill a Mockingbird”. When Atticus Finch is appointed to defend a real mockingbird, a black man charged with the rape of a white girl, he and his family become deeply involved in a drama that shakes up his town of Maycomb, Alabama. Told through the eyes of Atticus’ daughter, Scout Finch, Lee weaves a beautiful coming-of-age tale that confronts the major thematic issues of prejudice, racism and inequality.

This book is recommended for middle school and high school reading programs, as well as other educational community reading programs.
